Despite the shadow’s insistence I followed, I could not. Light had entered my life, soaked into my every pore, steeped my soul in golden wonder, flight was the furthest thought from my mind.
“You are one of us,” it hissed. “There is no place for the Gone amongst the Now. You must step back across the divide. You must!”
How could I? Her eyes were the colour of summer, her skin the texture of spring, I was lost to the light that was she. I chose to burn in the day rather than skulk in the night, my fate sealed with nothing more than a glance.
As the shadow, that lost soul, fled back across God’s partition, I stepped closer as a breeze at midnight.
Burn. You’ll burn,” came the voices of the many.
Burn I did. It was worth it.
