50 Word Stories: Veneer

I trace the veined patterns in the table's pockmarked veneer false representations of the wood they've replaced. In mimicry of lives lost, lives once proud and tall, lives that reached into the earth with passion and pride, they entwine. Through it all I wonder: is my life a veneer, too?
